She then turned to activism and nonfiction, writing books including Capitalism: A Ghost Story and Power Politics, becoming one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in the process. In her long-awaited second novel, Roy follows two very different protagonists. Anjum is born intersex and lives as a woman, cobbling together a home in a cemetery. The beguiling Tilo, meanwhile, is courted by several men, and loves a Kashmiri activist. When concern over an abandoned infant brings Anjum and Tilo together, Roy deftly weaves her characters' fates with India's social and political tensions, using multiple points of view as well as "found" documents.
