Crushed by economic realities and overwhelming family responsibilities, he leaves a widow and an unborn child to fend for themselves. The two are lucky enough to find a kind of guardian in Sister St. Savior, a Little Sister of the Sick Poor, and McDermott vividly evokes the 1940s and ‘50s from the perspective of Catholic Brooklyn.
