53:25Now PlayingThe Knights Templar was a Catholic military order established in 1119, just after the First Crusade. Charged with protecting Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land, the order was supported by the wealthy and powerful of Europe and grew quickly. Templar knights were skilled fighters, while other members of the group built fortifications and developed an early banking system. Formidable as they were, the Templars lost ground in the East and fell under suspicion in France, where hundreds were executed. After secret trials at the Vatican, the Templars were disbanded in 1312. Their legend has haunted history ever since, and Jones’s dynamic narrative investigates long-standing mysteries about exactly who the Templars were and how they operated.
