YouTube Description
as posted by the channelRebecca Erbelding discusses her book, "Rescue Board", at Politics and Prose o 5/5/18.
An archivist, curator, and historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Erbelding is one of the principal organizers of the Museum’s new exhibit on the American response to the Holocaust. While the U.S. could have done far more to save European Jews from the Nazis, Erbelding’s research uncovered the little-known story of John Pehle, a Treasury lawyer who helped persuade Roosevelt to organize the War Refugee Board in 1944. With Pehle in charge, the agency mobilized diplomats, smugglers, relief workers, and bureaucrats in a dozen countries across four continents; their work involved forging identity papers, recruiting spies, leaking news, and channeling food and money to underground organizations. In twenty months, the Board saved tens of thousands of lives.
