The economic crisis hit Black households especially hard, cutting their wealth by more than 30 percent and signaling to Black millennials that middle-class stability might be beyond their reach. In this illuminating report, Allen shows how this generation of young Black Americans is coping. Taking us around the country, she shares the challenges, strategies, and, yes, the dreams that motivate them, telling the stories of a former college athlete struggling with student debt, a Republican trying to reconcile personal and political values, and a lawyer who has joined the reverse Great Migration, leaving New York for the South.
Allen, an Eisner Fellow at the Nation Institute and a former fellow at New America and Demos, is in conversation with Ibram X. Kendi, author of the National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning and founding director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University.
