As a former deputy director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center and the FBI's National Security Branch, Mudd witnessed first-hand the tremendous shock wave that went through the nation’s intelligence agencies with the 9/11 attacks. Drawing on his own experiences and on access to top-level officials, including George Tenet, Mudd paints a chilling picture of the fear of another attack that drove the CIA to weaponize intelligence gathering by the widespread adoption of enhanced interrogation techniques. Going beyond the 2014 Senate report, Mudd provides new details on the reality of CIA prisons to illuminate how and why interrogators made the decisions they did.
