Nearly synonymous with the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman (c. 1820-1913) helped bring hundreds of slaves to freedom. She also spied for the Union Army and led an armed expedition during the Civil War, then worked for women’s suffrage and advocated for the elderly. In this vivid and fresh biography, Dunbar, Charles and Mary Beard Professor of History at Rutgers and author of the Frederick Douglass Book Award-winner Never Caught, celebrates the life and achievements of one of the nation’s extraordinary women through a combination of scholarship and dynamic graphics ranging from sidebars and illuminating timelines to illustrations and photos—many of them new. Dunbar is in conversation with Dolen Perkins-Valdez, author of Wench.
Erica Armstrong Dunbar is the Charles and Mary Beard Professor of History at Rutgers University. Her first book, A Fragile Freedom: African American Women and Emancipation in the Antebellum City, was published by Yale University Press in 2008. Her second book, Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge was a 2017 finalist for the National Book Award in nonfiction and a winner of the 2018 Frederick Douglass Book Award.
