Demonstrating that much of what we now take for granted about the Middle East—from Islamic extremism and factional divisions to anti-American sentiment—has come about only in the wake of the Iranian Revolution, Ghattas, a BBC radio and TV correspondent and author of The Secretary, tracks the impact of the momentous upheaval through Iran’s relations with Saudi Arabia over the last forty years. Once allies working together to stem the spread of Soviet communism, after 1979 the two nations split along Shia-Sunni lines, each using religion to consolidate their regional power and fueling tensions that led to the 1991 American invasion of Iraq, the September 11th terrorist attacks, and the rise of ISIS. Ghattas is in conversation with Lissa Muscatine, co-owner of Politics and Prose. Muscatine served as a presidential speechwriter in the Clinton White House and as chief speechwriter to Hillary Rodham Clinton during her tenures as first lady and secretary of state. She is currently working on a book, Hillaryland, to be published by Penguin Press.
Kim Ghattas is an Emmy-award winning journalist and writer who covered the Middle East for twenty years for the BBC and the Financial Times. She has also reported on the U.S State Department and American politics. She has been published in The Atlantic, the Washington Post, and Foreign Policy and is currently a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. Her first book, The Secretary, was a New York Times bestseller. Born and raised in Lebanon, she now lives between Beirut and Washington D.C.
