A Hillsborough survivor himself, Byrne has spent years fighting for truth and justice. And not just for the 97 who lost their lives at Hillsborough, but for every victim of institutional failure and state cover-ups.
The law, originally drafted by lawyers Pete Weatherby KC and Elkan Abrahamson, has two key principles: duty of candour and parity of arms. The first would see officials have to the truth in public inquiries, and the second would mean that any independent party can match the legal resources of the state in court.
Byrne describes how, despite public commitments from the Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the bill was unceremoniously shouted down in Parliament. He explains how this law applies not just to the Hillsborough families, but for victims of injustices like the Post Office Horizon scandal, the infected blood scandal, and Grenfell.
Byrne also speaks to the wider state of the Labour party, reflecting on trust in politics, working class representation, the dangers of establishment pushback, and the continued fight to hold power to account.
