9:42Now PlayingIn the House of Commons yesterday, Foreign Secretary David Lammy delivered a stark condemnation of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza, calling the humanitarian situation a “grotesque spectacle” that violates international law. Lammy condemned Israel's aid restrictions and military strikes which have left 2 million Palestinians trapped and desperate for food, water, and medical aid.
But Lammy's statement didn't go unchallenged. MPs from across the political spectrum (including Jeremy Corbyn, Kit Malthouse, Florence Eshalomi, and Andy McDonald) grilled the Foreign Secretary over his failure to act decisively on Palestine. He was accused of cowardice, complicity, and presiding over a foreign policy that leaves Britain “irrelevant.” MPs question why the UK continues to support arms sales to Israel and call for an immediate ceasefire, the recognition of Palestinian statehood, and a comprehensive arms and trade embargo.
One MP goes so far as to suggest that Lammy himself could face legal consequences at The Hague if the UK government continues to ignore its international obligations.
