Spiro discusses a letter he drafted on behalf of musicians and scholars calling on New York to pass the Rap Music On Trial bill, which would make it more difficult for prosecutors to introduce creative expressions, like rap lyrics and videos, as evidence in criminal trials. The law enforcement practice has raised First Amendment and racial bias concerns and the proposed law seeks to strike a balance between interests of justice, free speech, and law enforcement interest in public safety.
