The Self mediates between external and internal realities.

This rendering requires huge amounts of mental resources. When the Self is depleted owing to stress, it shuts off either external reality or internal reality, depending on the locus of the stressor.

When external reality is shut off, internal reality remains unadulterated (this is known as mental illness such as narcissism and psychosis). When internal reality is disabled, the results are dissociation and numbing.
