The People vs. The Elites, Revolt of the Masses: Narcissistic Injuries, Now Rage (Briefing, Vienna)

Weberian (institutional-bureaucratic) vs. Nihilistic polities.

Not only in the USA: Hungary, Israel, Turkey, Serbia, Russia. Giving a long-term competitive edge to countries like China and Germany.

The People endured narcissistic injuries: the elites, left and right, were condescending and contemptuous. The People react with narcissistic rage.

Envy of the elites masquerades as victimhood and righteous indignation.

Tax dollars are money confiscated by a faceless, heartless bureaucracy. Wresting it back from them - even via corruption and graft by the few - is perceived as a positive.

Egregious and even criminal misconduct is a positive: it is showing the finger to the elites and the bureaucracy. The more the latter protest, the more the masses cheer and egg on the offenders.

Lack of credentials and experience is a plus: it means that officeholders are outsiders, not beholden to special interests and the entrenched officialdom.

Bumbling, ignorant, incurious fools besotted with inane conspiracy theories and hating on science and erudition are beloved because they reflect and mirror the profile of their typical electorate (“base”).

Breaking things, destruction, and sabotage are the only way to undo the labyrinth, exit the maze, and drain the swamp. Move the rocks to unearth the critters lurking under them.

Intellectuals, scientists, and authoritative experts are virulently hated and despised. Their abodes - educational institutions - are dens of iniquity and cabals. They need to be torn down. Folk wisdom is perceived as far more reliable, closer to reality, and helpful.

There is an overwhelming wish to tear down the institutional edifice that is the lair of these nefarious players. To disinfect with sunlight the penumbral corners of the haughty minds of the educated. Even at the cost of cataclysmic, convulsive self-destruction.

Of course, this mindset invites opportunists, criminals, tyrants, and con artists to take over the enterprise of dismantling the state and sharing the spoils.

But the people don’t care, immersed as they are in a revolutionary orgy of tearing down their prison. There is a sense of liberation: no rules, no laws, no barriers to entry, no minimum requirements as total anomie prevails. This is anarchy pretending to be freedom.
