One morning she was hanging in the Salon Carré, and shortly after, the most recognizable painting in the world was gone. What followed was a two-year investigation filled with bad assumptions, conflicting witnesses, media pressure, false suspects, radical artists, wealthy collectors, and one ordinary man who may have fooled everyone by looking like he belonged. In this episode, we’ll look at the theft of the Mona Lisa from a criminal behavior and investigative perspective. Was this the work of a professional thief? A museum insider? A wealthy collector? Or was the real offender hiding in plain sight all along?
I just returned from Paris, where the Mona Lisa still draws huge crowds. That trip sparked a fresh look at this historic case I participated in discussing the case with other experts and Lawrence Fishburne on History’s Greatest Mysteries. We looked beyond the art mystery and into opportunity, offender behavior, investigative assumptions, and how one theft helped turn the Mona Lisa into a worldwide icon. Let’s examine the empty frame, the missing doorknob, the early use of fingerprint evidence and the suspicion around Eddie Guerin, Pablo Picasso , Guillaume Apollinaire, J.P. Morgan and a relatively unknown Italian named Vincenzo Peruggia.
