MLA Rachel Notley hated the Workers Compensation Board. But Premier Rachel Notley, loves it.
She loves it so much that she wants to give WCB 43,000 more customers in the form of Alberta farms and ranches by forcing them to buy WCB coverage with her new farm safety legislation, Bill 6.
Notley really does hate WCB. Or she did. She spoke at protests that were held in front of the WCB building. She spoke out against the WCB system in Alberta as broken and miserly and bad for workers. She wanted the system reformed.
But Rachel Notley has done nothing to fix what she claims is wrong with WCB since taking power in May. Absolutely nothing.
Yet now, Rachel Notley is trying to force farmers, most of whom choose to carry more expensive and more comprehensive private liability insurance, into a bad miserly system that hurts workers.
It’s not good enough for her union friends but its good enough for farmers. Why? Is it because the Alberta Federation of Labour wants to unionize the WCB employees?
When responding to a question about the WCB bonus system for their employees, Gil McGowan of the AFL said this:
“We are also the only province where WCB employees are not represented by a union. No union would have ever allowed this kind of system to be imposed. It puts WCB staff members in a horrible conflict of interest position"
So is Bill 6 really about safety the way the Notley keeps saying? Because I’m not sure how sending WCB a cheque every month makes anyone safer. And Rachel Notley says WCB is a broken system anyway.
AFL wants to unionize WCB. And the United Food and Commercial Workers want to unionize farm workers.
This is about pleasing the unions that got the NDP elected on the backs of farmers and ranchers.
