Do you know what's more dangerous than standing on the side of a mountain incline with an industrial chainsaw in your hand, logging trees so that they don’t crush you? A llama.
Do you know what's more dangerous than using explosives to blast away the side of a mountain to excavate limestone? Milking a cow.
How do I know this? I've looked at the new WCB rates. There are new rates per industry, now that Bill 6 has passed and farms have to be compliant with WCB and OHS regulations.
Now owning an Alpaca is legally determined to be more dangerous than working in a quarry, logging, and working in upstream oil and gas.
This is exactly why farmers were resistant to Bill 6. Actually there are many reasons to be opposed to Bill6 but this is a big one. It’s a cash grab. How can some pencil pusher in an office somewhere even begin to calculate the risk of being hurt on a farm by an Alpaca?
Most farmers already have better and more comprehensive insurance for themselves and their workers. How does taking that same money and sending it to WCB every month instead keep anyone safer? This is like voodoo: "Send us an offering. We will cast a spell to chase the injury gremlins off the farm."
The oil and gas sector has cheap WCB rates. But they have so many safety training courses, safety officers, safety meetings and on-site medics. Big oil companies can afford to do all that to keep their WCB rate cheap. How on earth can mom and pop farms carry this burden?
They can't afford to have an on-site medic, or a safety officer so that they can have cheaper WCB premiums.
Small farms now are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
