NDP had advance notice of layoffs, did nothing about it

Group layoff numbers in Alberta have surged this past year.

Over 2015, nearly 18,000 Albertans have been part of a group layoff in Alberta. That’s nearly a 140% increase over 2014. Almost 80 % of these layoffs are related to the oil and gas sector.

How do we know?

In Alberta, "if an employer intends to terminate the employment of 50 or more employees at a single location within a four-week period, the employer must – by law – give the Minister of Jobs, Skills Training and Labour four weeks’ written notice of intention to do so. The notice must specify the number of employees whose employment will be terminated and the effective date of the terminations."

That’s straight from the Jobs Ministry website.

Now we know the Alberta government has advanced notice of mass job losses in Alberta. This information is supposed to help the government react to the economic climate, and mitigate and prevent further job losses.

What is the government doing with this valuable advance notice of layoffs? Picking fights with farmers through the farm unionization law Bill 6, running the up the biggest debt in Alberta's history, and implementing a job killing carbon tax on everything.

At the end of October, nearly 60,000 Albertans were on employment insurance, a 102% increase from last year. Active drilling rigs in the province were at 22% of Alberta's available rigs, down 53% since the year before. Of the mass job losses the government knows about, almost 80% are from oil and gas.

If these jobs numbers were from the auto sector, they'd be getting a bailout. But oil and gas doesn’t want a bailout, they just want the attacks, in the form of a carbon tax, a royalty review and corporate tax hikes, to stop. Albertans need to get back to work and the job creators need the NDP to get out of the way.

Every time a company announces mass job losses Albertans should know, Jobs Minister, Lori Sigurdson knew a month in advance.

I think she needs to answer for her lack of reaction or be laid off herself.
