Germany’s Energy Craziness: Closing Nuclear Plants, Bulldozing a Village (and a wind Project) to Expand Coal Mine
Some 15,000 people in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia have been protesting the expansion of the Garzweiler coal mine. The German government has okayed the expansion which will result in the bulldozing the entire village of Luetzerath.
Not only are they taking down the village to make way for the coal mine, they are also dismantling the Keyenberg wind project.
That this is happening in Germany, which wants to portray itself as a leader on cutting emissions is remarkable enough.
But here’s what is really crazy town: In April, Germany will shut down three nuclear plants that produce about 30 TWh of electricity per year. As Mark Nelson recently pointed out on Twitter, that’s roughly the same amount of juice as is being produced by the power plants fueled by the coal mine.
