A negative culture does not always mean your capsule was clean.
It means the bacteria did not grow in the lab. It does not prove bacteria were absent.
In my PCR study of 694 capsules, 29% contained bacterial DNA that standard cultures completely missed.
Why? Biofilm.
Biofilm can protect bacteria from detection by the same test most hospitals use to check for infection.
Culture and PCR answer different questions:
Culture asks: can we grow this?
PCR asks: is the DNA here?
If your culture was negative but you still don't feel right, that result doesn't close the case. It may mean the wrong tool was used to look.
I'm going live Thursday August 20 at 6 PM Central to explain the difference and what it can mean for your recovery.
