14:01Now PlayingHoward University President, Dr. A.I. Frederick released a statement on Friday addressing the controversy surrounding the gentrifiers strolling Howard University's Yard with their dogs.
Frederick said, ""Our campus is a beautiful, sacred space that provides comfort and, in many ways, sanctuary in a place that feels more like a second home than merely an academic institution... the Yard, is a treasured site of Our Commencement Ceremony. [It] is the ultimate long walk that symbolizes a sacred tradition, ...every student's matriculation.
We are aware of the concerns regarding dog walking across campus.... We appreciate pet owners respecting our campus by not bringing pets onto the private areas."
Despite the powerful statement from Howard's president, residents of urban communities still have to find a way to ward off the "colonizers" and keep them from running residents from our of their neighborhoods.
Civil rights attorney Ari Theresa has a few ideas on how the colonization of urban neighborhoods began in Washington DC and how to combat the issue. Theresa has filed a billion dollar suit against DC last year over gentrification. He spoke with Roland Martin during Monday's edition of #RolandMartinUnfiltered.
