15:33Now PlayingVice President Elect Kamala Harris has formally resigned from her US senate seat. She submitted her letter of resignation to California Governor Gavin Newsom, ending her four year career in the chamber.
She posted this video to twitter thanking California for allowing her to represent the state.
This Wednesday Harris will be sworn into office as the Vice President of the United States by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor who is the first Latina Justice.
Harris will also use two Bibles during her swearing-in Ceremony. One of the Bibles she plans to use is one that belonged to Thurgood Marshall who was the first Black Supreme Court Justice. The other belonged to Mrs. Regina Shelton, a woman who acted as a second mother to Harris and her sister Maya.
Now that Harris will assume the office of vice president of the United States, African American women will not be represented in the United States Senate.
