3:35Now PlayingBack in D.C., local and federal officials gather for the ribbon cutting of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge - schedule to be open to traffic this Friday.
Mayor Muriel Bowser, District Department of Transportation Acting Director Everett Lott, members of Douglass' family, and dozens of others walked across the bridge before the ceremony.
Douglass' great-great-great-grandson Ken Morris said this bridge is a good way to remember the famed abolitionist, but there's a better way to honor the bridge's namesake.
Today's ribbon-cutting ended a two-day celebration of the new bridge. There was a Labor Day with a 5K attended by approximately 4,000 people.
