Attorney General Merrick Garland instructed federal prosecutors today to end sentencing disparities in cases involving the distribution of crack and powder cocaine.
Since the 1980s, laws have treated predominately black crack Cocaine offenders more punitively than white powder cocaine users.
This move would eliminate the current mandatory minimum federal sentence. The national policy for possessing 28 grams of crack cocaine triggers a minimum prison sentence of five years compared to 500 grams of powder cocaine.
On Friday, Regina LaBelle, the Addiction & Public Policy Initiative Director, and O'Neill Institute for National & Global Health Law at Georgetown University Law Center and North Dakota Congressman Kelly Armstrong spoke with Roland Martin about how this change will impact Black communities.
