Last night, republican lawmakers voted on the controversial bill following
hours of debate on the house floor.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Tray Lamar sponsored the bill. He says the new court system would help deal with a backlog of criminal cases.
The bill would establish a separate court system with two judges appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court chief justice.
Jackson's mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, says this is an effort to seize the city.
