Roland Martin and Scott Bolden clashed over whether Black organizations, Black media, and Black institutions can demand corporate America defend voting rights while still depending on corporate checks. Roland argued that if Black political power in the South is facing an existential threat, corporate sponsors and board partners must be pressed to stand publicly with Black communities, not just cut checks for conferences and branding. The debate exposed the sacrifice at the center of Black media and Black institutional funding: taking the money can keep the infrastructure alive, but it can also limit the freedom to fight, speak, and disseminate information when the stakes are highest. Roland pushed Black America to fund its own media, legal groups, civil rights organizations, and self-funded institutions so truth-telling is not controlled by outside power.
