Roland Martin reports from the I AM A MAN Plaza in Memphis, walking viewers through the Black labor history tied to the 1968 sanitation workers strike, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Clayborn Temple. He recounts the deaths of Echol Cole and Robert Walker, the demands of the 1,300 sanitation workers, the marches, police violence, Larry Payne’s death, and the eventual union victory. Roland also shows the destruction of Clayborn Temple, which officials say was purposely set on fire in an arson attack, and notes that no one has been arrested. He also issues a direct challenge to NBA players who complain about Memphis, saying they should stop ignoring the city’s Black history and experience it for themselves.
