In this week’s episode of The Other Side of Change, Jamira Burley and Brea Baker continue their examination of the Supreme Court’s growing influence over voting rights and democratic participation. Building on last week’s conversation, they turn their attention to what happens next as states move to redraw congressional maps, weaken voting protections, and dilute Black political power.
Award-winning journalist Adria R. Walker joins the show to discuss her reporting across the South, where civil rights veterans, grassroots organizers, and local communities are responding to the rollback of voting rights protections. From Selma and Montgomery to Mississippi and beyond, Walker shares what she’s hearing from people who fought for these rights decades ago and are now watching those gains come under renewed attack.
Later, Mercedes Philbride of Repower breaks down how organizers are responding on the ground. From voter education and turnout efforts to long-term strategies for building political power, she explains what it will take to confront voter suppression, challenge gerrymandering, and prepare communities for the fights ahead.
Together, the conversations focus on a central question: what does it take to defend democracy when the institutions meant to protect it are helping dismantle it?
