Washington, D.C., honored Urban One founder and Black media pioneer Cathy Hughes with the Key to the City, recognizing her decades of leadership in broadcasting, journalism, entrepreneurship and community service.
In a wide-ranging conversation with Roland Martin, Hughes reflected on the mission of Black-owned media, saying it must represent the community, make Black voices heard and tell the truth about who Black people are and what they want. She revisited the “Take It Back” campaign against The Washington Post, where sustained community pressure helped drive advertising in its magazine from 142 pages down to eight.
Hughes also challenged today’s Black leadership, criticized the lack of collective support for Rep. Al Green, warned about government and corporate pressure on Black media, and argued that Black consumers still do not fully understand the power of their dollars. She said Urban One must remain “still unapologetically in the Black people business,” and defined her legacy in deeply personal terms: “I love my people.”
