Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are escalating their attack on the Smithsonian and the complete telling of American history.

During a congressional hearing examining the Smithsonian, Rep. Kweisi Mfume delivered a defiant warning: “If you erase it, we will replace it. It’s that damn simple.” He vowed that the National Museum of African American History and Culture would not be destroyed and said Black history is “too sacred” and “too precious” to erase.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett blasted the proceeding as a “Republicans’ White Pride rally disguised as a congressional hearing,” arguing that attacks on the Smithsonian are attempts to rewrite and erase the violent, racist and discriminatory parts of American history.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley accused Trump of trying to turn museums into instruments of MAGA propaganda, while Rep. Maxwell Frost challenged critics who attack Smithsonian exhibits without understanding the institutions or their scholarly review process.

The fight is bigger than one hearing. It is about who controls American history, whether Black truth will be preserved and whether political power will be allowed to censor the past.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Rep. Maxwell Frost push back against MAGA attacks on the Smithsonian and efforts to sanitize American history. Mfume declares, “If you erase it, we will replace it. It’s that damn simple,” while Crockett calls the hearing a “Republicans’ White Pride rally disguised as a congressional hearing.” The Democratic lawmakers warn that political interference in museums is censorship, MAGA propaganda and part of a broader attack on Black history, education and democracy.
