Mandela Barnes shocked Wisconsin politics by announcing that he was dropping out of the governor’s race with only 11 days left before the Democratic primary. Barnes said it had become clear who the party’s nominee would be and argued that Democrats now need to focus on defeating Republican Tom Tiffany, but Roland Martin and the panel were left asking a basic question: what really happened?

Roland calls the situation “completely nonsensical” and says the timing does not add up. The panel notes that a recently cited poll showed Barnes trailing Francesca Hong 38% to 16%, with 34% of voters still undecided. Even with those numbers, Roland and the panel argue that it is highly unusual for a major candidate to abruptly leave a race this close to the primary, especially after a campaign has already raised money, built infrastructure and publicly announced millions in total support and outside spending.
