Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Haley Stevens joined Roland Martin to lay out what she says is at stake for Black communities in Michigan and why she believes Trump’s economic and budget priorities are causing direct harm. Stevens says the number one issue she hears from Michiganders is rising costs, but she adds that Black communities are being hit hardest because job insecurity, disinvestment and cuts to key programs are landing where inequality already exists.

Stevens says Trump’s “defund movement” is doing more than shrinking government in the abstract. She argues that it is stripping opportunity away from Black communities by weakening support systems, targeting minority business programs and cutting Black-owned businesses off from federal contracts. She specifically points to threats to the Minority Business Development Agency and says Congress cannot ignore what happens when Black entrepreneurs lose access to the resources and relationships needed to compete.

Her answer is a candidacy-centered pitch built around economic access and accountability. Stevens says Black businesses do not just need another loan. They need capital. She says her agenda includes expanding access to capital, protecting federal contracting opportunities, supporting Black entrepreneurship and pursuing equitable growth so that Michigan’s economy works for communities that have too often been left behind.

Stevens also connects her Senate bid to a broader Michigan jobs message. She says Trump’s tariffs and policy instability are creating job insecurity, that clean-energy and manufacturing investments have been disrupted and that working families are paying the price. She argues that Michigan needs a senator who will aggressively advocate for jobs, fair investment and a federal agenda that helps ordinary people instead of rewarding chaos.

Roland presses Stevens on Black voter frustration, Democratic accountability and whether candidates truly show up in Black communities before election season. Stevens responds by saying her outreach is not new, that she has long been involved in solutions and investments in Black communities and that her campaign is centered on making tax dollars work for working families rather than personal enrichment. She says she does not own stock, is not trying to get rich in office and wants to make government deliver for the people who need it most.
