A Black teen went to Myrtle Beach during spring break and came home with a life-altering injury after police gunfire tore through the chaos.
Serenity Chavis and her mother, Kendra Malloy, are suing officer Brandon O’Rourke and the Myrtle Beach Police Department, arguing that he fired with a crowd behind his target and failed to protect innocent bystanders.
Malloy says doctors initially warned that Serenity might lose her leg. Instead, she endured a 10-hour reconstructive surgery, now has metal in her leg, and may walk with a limp for the rest of her life.
The trauma did not end at the hospital. Malloy says Serenity struggles with depression, fear of crowds, fear of loud noises, and cannot fully enjoy holidays or public gatherings the way she once did.
John Barnett says the department claimed it did nothing wrong, the officer returned to duty, and the family had to keep pressing for answers.
