Nearly 25 million people enrolled in standalone Medicare Part D prescription-drug plans could be affected when the Trump administration ends the Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration after 2026.

The program provided federal support to insurers to help prevent sharp premium increases. With that support ending, final 2027 plan prices will not be known until September, but some seniors could face significantly higher monthly costs beginning January 1.

Many Black seniors already manage multiple prescriptions while living on fixed incomes. When every dollar is stretched between groceries, electricity, housing, and medicine, prescription drugs are often the first expense sacrificed.

The warning is clear: do not cancel a plan now, do not choose a plan based only on the monthly premium, and pay close attention when annual notices arrive in September. Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. Seniors should compare premiums, deductibles, pharmacy access, and whether every medication they take remains covered.

This is more than a technical insurance change. It is another pressure point in a broader healthcare assault that could leave Black seniors choosing between their health and basic survival.
