A Black father tried to enjoy the pool with his children. A white woman decided he did not belong, demanded ID, and called police in front of his kids.

Texas attorney Lee Merritt posted video of a Black father being confronted at a pool by a white woman who demanded to see his ID. The father says he was the only Black man there, that nobody else was being asked for identification, and that the woman called police on him in front of his children after he refused to comply.

The most painful moment came when one of the father’s sons began crying and pleaded, “I don’t want you to go to jail.” The father tried to keep his children calm and told them he did not want them traumatized by what was happening.

Roland Martin said what viewers witnessed was trauma. He argued that Black boys and Black girls are still seeing ordinary encounters turn into police confrontations, crime scenes, and even funerals. Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali explains that this kind of “caucasity” operates like a demand for freedom papers, while Joe Richardson points to the lifelong lesson the boys will carry after watching their father stand on his rights.

Brian Shapiro compares the woman to a modern-day Carolyn Bryant and argues that racist police callers should face consequences when they use law enforcement to harass Black families.
