Leo Sullivan says white women told his Black family, “You don’t belong here,” called police on him twice, and laughed when his frightened son began to cry.

Leo Sullivan was sitting by the pool with his children when a white woman approached and told his family, “You people have to leave” and “You don’t belong here.” Sullivan showed proof that they were staying at the property, but the harassment continued.

Police were called to the pool and verified that Sullivan was allowed to be there. Afterward, Sullivan asked for the name of the woman involved and returned to his room. Police were then called on him a second time, with the claim that he had harassed her simply by asking for her name.

Sullivan says the encounter traumatized his family. His son began crying because he feared what police might do to his father, and Sullivan says the women giggled and laughed as the child cried. “I felt my dignity had been stripped from me,” Sullivan says.

Attorney Michael Sterling says the case is bigger than one pool. He argues that white people were presumed to belong while Sullivan had to prove that he did, and he says they will pursue every available legal option to hold those responsible accountable.
