Tarrant County MAGA officials considered slashing Election Day polling locations from 316 in the 2022 midterms to 176 this year. Early-voting locations would also fall from 50 to 42, leaving 1.3 million registered voters with fewer places to cast a ballot.
Commissioner Alisa Simmons says the proposed cuts would hit Black and Latino communities especially hard, naming Polytechnic, Stop Six, Como, and North Side among the areas affected. She rejects the claim that the elections administrator developed the plan without direction from the Republican majority and says the effort is about keeping people from voting.
The public packed the hearing, filling two overflow rooms. Simmons says 156 people spoke and hundreds more submitted comments, forcing county leaders to table the proposal for now.
Simmons argues that Tarrant County Republicans are scared of losing power after growing Democratic turnout and recent electoral gains. She is preparing a list of polling sites to add back and is calling for a massive Black voter turnout in November.
