Professor Kwasi Konadu describes the human body as the vehicle, the spirit as the driver, and ancestry as the GPS. For him, those ancestors aren't simply subjects of history. They actively shape how he lives, teaches, researches, heals, builds institutions, and understands his responsibility to African people.
Dr. Greg Carr sits down with Konadu for a deeply personal conversation tracing his ancestral connections from Jamaica to Ghana and Benin. Konadu discusses growing up in a family of healers, learning from his maternal grandfather, his Maroon ancestry, African spiritual traditions, and why he sees the spiritual and material worlds as inseparable.
That foundation runs directly through his scholarship. Konadu explains how dreams and intuition led him to Ghana, how years of listening and research brought him to healer Kofi Donko, and why recovering African history requires scholars to work through language, archives, oral knowledge, silences, translation, and the biases embedded in colonial records.
Carr and Konadu also discuss the influence of Dr. James Turner, Konadu's work on African healing and history, Diasporic Africa Press, his Powered by Ancestry platform, and forthcoming scholarship including Empires of Gold. At the center is a commitment to scholarship that serves African people and builds rather than hoards knowledge.
As Konadu puts it, African people don't have to “cannibalize each other.” We can all eat.
