Nolan Wells should be celebrating his 19th birthday with his family. Instead, his loved ones are still demanding answers about how the young Black man died.

Six weeks after Nolan’s body was discovered in the water near Horn Island off the coast of Mississippi, his family still does not know what happened. The Congressional Black Caucus has called on the FBI to launch an independent investigation, and the NAACP has now joined the legal team led by Ben Crump in the family’s fight for truth.

The NAACP says it is bringing the full might of the organization to the push for justice, including legal, investigative and moral support. Kristen Clarke also called for greater transparency from the local prosecutor, saying the public deserves reassurance that the investigation is being handled thoroughly, fairly and expeditiously.

The fight for answers comes as Clarke warns that the Justice Department and Civil Rights Division have “turned its back on black people” and abandoned the task of enforcing federal civil rights laws. She says Black families have lost an important federal avenue for justice and accountability when local and state systems lack the resources, expertise or political will to act.

Nolan’s family continues to keep his name and case in the public eye while grieving the son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend who should be celebrating his 19th birthday.
