In this week’s episode of The Other Side of Change, Jamira Burley and Brea Baker examine why Luigi Mangione’s killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson became a cultural phenomenon instead of being received solely as a tragedy. The celebration, fan art, merchandise and legal-defense fundraising surrounding Mangione reveal something much larger than fascination with one man: years of anger at insurance companies denying care, corporations extracting enormous profits and institutions that increasingly leave ordinary people feeling powerless.

That anger raises a harder question: what happens when people stop believing the systems designed to deliver accountability actually work? Burley and Baker unpack the “eat the rich” energy surrounding Mangione, the difference between understanding rage and endorsing violence, and the racial divide in who America allows to become a sympathetic vigilante. For Black Americans, romanticizing justice outside the system carries a particularly brutal history, from lynch mobs and white supremacist violence to the punishment of Black communities fighting for their own survival.

Poet, essayist, organizer and strategist Trey Wooden joins the discussion to push deeper into the crisis of legitimacy behind the public reaction. He connects healthcare, housing, wages, student debt and corporate power to a broader rejection of a system that demands more from working people while giving them less in return. The conversation moves through capitalism, race, Black resistance, authoritarianism and the erosion of faith in democratic institutions before confronting the central challenge: how righteous rage can become political transformation instead of spectacle, retaliation or another form of violence turned against people with the least power.
