“Not In This Number, Not With This Frequency.” LDF Demands Probe Into Suspicious Black Deaths

Black people are being found hanging under suspicious circumstances, and LDF says the pattern is too serious to ignore. Janai Nelson is demanding a full investigation before more Black families are left without answers.

The Legal Defense Fund has sent letters to Congress and the United Nations demanding a serious response to the increasing number of suspicious deaths involving Black people across the country. Janai Nelson said LDF is not rushing to judgment and is not labeling these deaths lynchings without evidence, but she made clear that Black people are being found dead under conditions similar to historic racial terror and the pattern demands real investigation, real data collection, and real accountability.

Roland Martin pressed the urgency even harder. He pointed to the disturbing number of Black people found hanging this year and challenged the rush to classify several of those deaths as suicides. Nelson said people do not typically hang themselves "not in this number, not with this frequency," and warned that America cannot afford to look back years from now and realize it ignored the beginning of another tragedy.

The panel widened the stakes beyond the individual cases. They argued that local, state, and federal systems have long failed to value Black life equally, and that the current Department of Justice cannot be counted on to aggressively protect Black communities. They called for Congress to use its investigative authority, for state officials to be pressured as well, and for Black media and independent reporting to keep forcing attention onto stories too many outlets are still ignoring.
