A powerful storm system is brewing for early March that could bring the first significant severe weather outbreak of 2025. Current forecasts show an extremely concerning setup as temperatures running 10-20°F above normal clash with an incoming storm system.
The Storm Prediction Center has already issued a 15% risk (slight risk) for Tuesday, March 4th, covering East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and western Tennessee. This includes over 8 million people who need to be prepared for potentially dangerous conditions.
This system is particularly concerning because:
- Extremely warm, humid air with dewpoints in the 60s-70s°F will surge northward from the Gulf
- A powerful jet stream with winds exceeding 100 knots will provide strong wind shear
- The combination supports all severe hazards: damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding, and tornadoes
- The surface low could deepen to around 980-990mb, an unusually strong cyclone for early March
Timing:
- Tuesday afternoon/evening: Storms erupt from eastern Texas/Oklahoma into Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi
- Tuesday night: A squall line likely develops, moving into the Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys
- Wednesday: The line continues eastward, potentially affecting the Southeast and Carolinas
This is a classic early-spring pattern with a strong jet-fueled trough, intense surface cyclone, and sharp temperature contrasts. If you're in the affected regions, now is the time to review your severe weather safety plans.
