In this video, I break down the significant severe weather outbreak expected across the central and eastern United States during the first week of March, peaking on March 4-5. A powerful upper-level trough will dig into the Southwest US before ejecting eastward, bringing together all the ingredients for dangerous thunderstorms.
We are taking the rare step of issuing a 30% risk area SIX DAYS in advance - showing unusual confidence in this potentially dangerous event. By Tuesday afternoon, explosive thunderstorm development is expected as a deepening surface low pulls moisture northward from the Gulf, creating the perfect environment for supercells capable of producing strong tornadoes (EF2+), very large hail, and damaging straight-line winds.
The threat shifts eastward on Wednesday, bringing severe weather risks to the Gulf Coast states, Southeast, and possibly into parts of the Mid-Atlantic. On top of the severe storm threat, this system will create critical fire weather conditions in the Plains due to strong winds and dry air.
Make sure you're prepared NOW by having multiple ways to receive warnings and a safe shelter plan. This early March setup is looking particularly volatile, and staying informed could save your life.
