President Trump claimed in a “Meet the Press” interview that California was conducting massive voter fraud. It was also alleged that California allowed gym or health club memberships to be used for voter ID.
Essentially, yes it’s true. California allows a health club membership to be used as voter ID.
The California Code of Regulations states this on the California Secretary of State’s Webpage.
However, these rules relate to the 2002 Help America Vote Act, which do not state the criteria voter voter identification, only that a “photo identification” be presented along with a “current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter.”
Different states have different regulations as to what constitutes a photo identification, with some states stricter than others.
Does this make voter fraud more likely in California? It certainly makes it more probably than in states with stricter criteria for voter identification, but California is following current federal law.
