Would using a nuclear weapon against Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain make Russia or China more likely to use nuclear weapons?

The answer is yes—but probably not for the reason you think.

Nuclear weapons are tools. Horrifying tools, but tools nonetheless. Countries use weapons because they provide a capability that another weapon cannot. So the real question is not whether Russia or China would feel morally “permitted” to use nuclear weapons after an American strike. They do not need our permission.

The real danger is precedent.

In this video, I examine whether Russia could gain any meaningful battlefield advantage from using a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, why China might consider using one against an American carrier strike group, and how an attack on a deeply buried Iranian nuclear facility could change the way governments think about the nuclear taboo.

A nuclear weapon might collapse the tunnels, destroy the centrifuges, and solve the immediate engineering problem.

But once nuclear weapons become another tool in the toolbox, every nuclear power begins searching for its own Pickaxe Mountain.
