The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that a total of 422 million persons worldwide have Diabetes. Diabetes Mellitus or Diabetes is a chronic disease which is characterized by higher-than-normal levels of blood glucose or blood sugar. As the condition progresses, damage to organs such as the heart, kidney, nerves, and blood vessels occur. These complications affect the quality of life of persons living with Diabetes and can lead to death.
Type 2 Diabetes, the most common type, is preventable and can be controlled with a healthy lifestyle and adequate medical treatment. Every year, from November 1st, to 30th, campaigns to raise the awareness of Diabetes, its prevention and management, are executed. ‘World Diabetes Day’ is celebrated annually on November 14th.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Access to Diabetes Care” with the slogan “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response”.
This year, various activities are being planned to commemorate Diabetes Awareness month by both public and private entities.
A formal ceremony to observe ‘World Diabetes Day’ will be held at ……………. on November 14th and begin at 2pm giving key stakeholders in Diabetes care the opportunity to gather and become sensitized to what the Ministry is doing in Diabetes Care.
Screening activities are slated to be undertaken at 3 Massy Stores locations and at the Sir Stanislaus James Building on the Waterfront in Castries.
• Massy Stores Screening: Massy Mega 13th, City Store 15th, La Tourney 16th.
• Waterfront Screening: 8:30am to 12:30pm 14th, 21st and 28th, on the ground floor of the Sir Stanislaus James Building.
One of the most visible activities is an “All things Diabetes” health fair which is scheduled to take place at the Constitution Park on Thursday November 30th, 2023, from 10am to 4pm. Various booths will feature health education, health promotion and services for Diabetics. Partners from external agencies who have been giving support to the Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association will also be present. Diabetes related games and products will be on display during the day’s proceedings.
