YouTube Description
as posted by the channelA nationwide series of Mini-Consultations aimed at shaping Saint Lucia’s forthcoming National Policy for Persons with Disabilities has been successfully concluded. Led by the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment, and conducted between October 13 and 23, 2025, the sessions were facilitated by Consultant Dr. Clementia Eugene. They brought together a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including persons with disabilities, parents, caregivers, educators, community organizations, and government representatives.
Over fourteen consultations were held across the island, with more than two hundred participants engaged in meaningful dialogue designed to ensure that the emerging policy truly reflects local realities and the aspirations of Saint Lucians living with disabilities. This consultative process aligns with Saint Lucia’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Marrakesh Treaty, both of which the country ratified in 2020.
In recent years, Saint Lucia has seen the development of several impactful initiatives championed both by government and through the dedication of the NGO sector, with many programs led by persons with disabilities themselves. These efforts have laid a strong foundation for inclusion; however, participants noted that significant gaps remain in areas such as accessibility, employment, health, and social protection.
