---Imagine if in 1997, some celebrity of the moment — let’s say Will Smith — was quoted in People magazine talking about how much he wanted to live in Trump Tower. Just raving about living in Donald Trump’s signature property, how much it would signify his own personal success to live in the building. A broker for Smith reaches out to Trump’s people, who confirm that there is space in the building and gives a broad range of prices for a new home. Smith then starts trumpeting his imminent move and his success in figuring out a way into the exclusive building.
If you’re Trump in that moment, what do you do? There’s only one answer, and that’s: You jack up the price. Real estate is more complicated than supply and demand, but it’s often not much more complicated than that. Smith’s showing enormous demand has already all-but-committed to closing a deal — and Trump, it seems, can ask for whatever price he wants. Smith might back out, sure, but he’s already put himself in a tough position publicly.
The corollary here is hopefully obvious: Trump is Will Smith in this little play. Trump Tower is played, incongruously, by the murderous regime of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.---
