Should the left focus on deradicalizing conservatives? Deradicalization is a long and personal process. Perhaps the left should focus on reaching non-voters. There are a lot of them out there and that might be a more worthwhile effort than deredicalizing conservatives.

Caller: You had a show yesterday where you're talking about deradicalization versus reaching out. And I guess I want to get into the topic because I’m a little bit frustrated with the discourse. you have spoken well about it. I tend to agree with you well I think people are categories categorizing things very badly right like your conservative uncle who might believe in a good thing and then he might believe in three horrible things. you're completely different from a nazi right? And I do and I think people don't understand how de-radicalization takes a long time and it's not something everybody should do right? Right, it's like how can I explain it's not up to Jewish people to de-radicalize nazis. Kind of like it's not up to black people to de-radicalize KKK members. Because one it's not going to be very particularly effective. Because when you come to de-radicalization takes a long time and usually involves people in that community who they trust right? It very rarely does you have outsiders direct. If you want to do that fine. but it's I don't I think people have a very naive view of these types of things right?

Matt: Absolutely. For people to understand the context on the episode of my show last night at youtube.com/mattbinder I watched that that that conversation slash debate slash heated talk between Brianna of the bad faith and Talia who wrote culture warlords. That book about you know going undercover and white supremacist organizations online. And you know there was a whole controversy online about it because Brianna was really pushing for de-radicalization to build you know in order to build a multi-racial left coalition. And Talia is against that obviously for that purpose. Because deradicalization takes time it's on an individual level. you know you can't you know take.

Emma: And she has a lot of experience in this area given her investigative reporting and work in this field specifically.

Matt: And you can't take that and multiply it by the numbers you need to for it to actually be anything substantial. And yeah I mean I absolutely agree like on my show I talk about radicalization but it is always on that personal level like I never talk about oh if you could de-radicalize someone we're on our way to building a strong movement on the left. No that's just ridiculous to think that way. If you de-radicalize someone just on a personal level you're probably like helping that person in relationships in their personal in their real-life. Like that's basically what you're doing. which is a worthwhile value and effort if you're friends with somebody. But you can't expect people who you know who don't have that connection to be able to put in the work to do that. so they're really you know the deradicalization in terms of you know a building tool right I just don't see how it works to scale.

Caller: I can't give you a classic example like in jamaica right we have the homophobia issue right? One of the worst things people have outside pressure trying to change that has backfired spectacularly. Entrenches positions right? if for that thing to change in Jamaica it has to come within jamaica sadly enough it might not be fast enough for people's pleasure right but it's just the nature of the this is the nature of how humans work when it comes to changing their minds and stuff right? you're not meant to just trust an outsider. It's just the nature of the thing. And that's kind of what I want to focus on I think people need to have a more realistic view of how de-radicalization works. You know and categorizing.
