Democrats MUST Embrace Their Power To Gerrymander

Gerrymandering is an undemocratic practice and shouldn't be legal. However, it is legal and Republicans use it to great effect. Democrats should as well. It's wrong but unilateral disarmament is not the answer.

Emma: Talking about the concept of fighting back against Republicans in a way that they've been fighting us for quite a while with. That was a little convoluted and I'm trying to pull up this article. So Illinois democrats are gerrymandering very aggressively. So here's Dave Wasserman pointing out breaking as predicted this happened on Saturday Illinois Democrats have revised their proposal to a safer more aggressive 14 democrat three republican gerrymander. It's still about as ugly as before though. And just scroll down a little bit here bradley. So as I hinted last Sunday, Wasserman says this version creates a new much-anticipated Latino seat on the north side of Chicago. But it would do so by merging the homes of representatives Marie Newman and Sean Caston. and reconfiguring Illinois 06. and then here's what he anticipates it's going to be down here. New districts 14 Democrat three Republicans. So basically long story short Illinois is doing what Republicans on the state level have been doing for quite a while. Illinois democrats and they're trying to consolidate Democratic power. and this has been a long time coming because Republicans have been doing this for decades. Just these years at this point.

Matt: Also like to draw one of the dissimilarities which is that when the democrats do this it brings it more in line with the overall popular vote. And when the Republicans do it it's because they want to secure power for a minority.

Emma: Yes party exactly so there was a hesitancy to engage in this because gerrymandering is insane. It should be done along popular vote lines. but the reason it isn't done in that way as Matt mentioned is that doing so would benefit Democrats and not Republicans. so as long as Republicans are engaging in this practice and as long as this partisan gerrymandering is legal in this country. every state-level Democratic office needs to be doing this right away. right away. because as we're seeing a majority of the state houses are controlled by the GOP. We're in for a bloodbath in the 2022 midterms as anticipated. And because of the way that the Democrats are handling this infrastructure fight. And so for as long as this is legal Democrats have to engage in it. Because it's a way to slow the bleeding. Unfortunately though as I mentioned the fact that republicans do have disproportionate control on statehouses means that this fight will always be tilted in their direction for the foreseeable future. Which is why partisan gerrymandering needs to be outlawed. But in the meantime no unilateral disarmament. No fighting with one hand behind a tie behind your back. So as you'd say Matt it is insufficient but it is necessary.

Matt: Is it more democratic or less that's the question and in this case obviously more.

Emma: Obviously more.
