Mays: Typically stories of the development of American capitalism begin with either the industrial revolution and ignore slavery. Or they begin with slavery and the commodification and exploitation of people are African descent. But what they leave out is that where did those people where they were exploited they were exploited on the indigenous land right? And so the twin oppressions of enslavement and dispossession are fundamental to American capitalism. And without those two twin oppressions, you then don't have the development of the wealth of American capitalism today. and so minor financial institutions and real estate and ideas of property have been fundamental to American capitalism. But it was based on dispossession and enslavement. And without those things, you don't have great wealth in society today. and it's really sad when we discuss American capitalism. Someone asked me very recently about the economy and can native Americans really thrive under capitalism. I said no because you would have to return the land and if you return the land that will disrupt American capitalism at its core.
